Yogyakarta faces significant challenges in waste management. Limited landfill space is a major contributing factor, exacerbated by urbanization and low public environmental awareness. This challenge not only poses significant challenges to waste management but also poses significant challenges to water quality and the social – economic well-being of the Yogyakarta Special Region.

Nationally, 343 open dumping landfills (TPA) are slated for closure, including the Piyungan landfill in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This closure is not simply a technical issue of waste management but also marks a paradigm shift in environmental governance that requires systemic preparedness from the local government and collective public awareness.
